Preferred Term

Product Description
(C) AccesDirect.
Preferred Term is a non-participating renewable term plan that provides our clients with exceptionally competitive entry rates. It is available with 10 Year and 20 Year terms and each plan renews with the same term as the original. The coverage continues until age 80, after which time it terminates. This plan is also convertible to a Term to 100 plan with rates that are guaranteed in the contract. This conversion privilege is available until age 70. Super-Preferred and Preferred rates are available to qualified nonsmokers for the first term only. Preferred Term can also be added to a Universal Life as a rider to enhance the coverage and flexibility of those plans.

Renewability
The Preferred Term plan allows for the plan to be renewed at the end of the 10 or 20 year term. The renewal rates are based on the original term as well as the life insured's age, sex and smoking status at the time of issue. The plan is renewable until the insurance coverage terminates when the insured reaches age 80.

Special Conversion Rider
Preferred Term also offers a rider that allows the plan to be converted to any permanent life insurance plan offered at the time of the conversion. Coverage on the permanent plan will be subject to the minimum and maximum requirements at the time of conversion. The conversion right is available, without any further evidence of insurability, at any time before the age of 70, provided the coverage is still in force. The charge for this rider is 5% of premium and the rider must be chosen at the time of issue of the Preferred Term plan. If the plan contains the AD&D benefit, the plan owner has the right to include this benefit in the converted plan, subject to any age requirements. If the Preferred Term plan includes Waiver of Premium, the converted plan will automatically include this rider, provided that the converted plan is a non- participating permanent insurance plan and the life insured is not disabled at the time of conversion.

Conversion Right
Preferred Term may be converted, without any further evidence of insurability, to a Term to 100 with a contractually guaranteed premium, at any time before age 70, provided the coverage is still in force. If the plan contains the AD&D benefit, the plan owner has the right to include this benefit after the date of conversion, subject to any age requirements. If the Preferred Term plan includes Waiver of Premium, the converted plan will automatically include this rider, provided that the life insured is not disabled at the time of conversion.

Underwriting
All policies will be issued on an age nearest birthday basis. A paramedical report will be required with all applications. Further underwriting reports may be required depending upon the applicant's age and the Sum Insured requested. The underwriting requirements are based on the current amount applied for. For further information, please refer to the underwriting requirements chart in this rate card.

Preferred Term Preferred Classifications
Those who qualify under normal underwriting procedures as a nonsmoker may be able to qualify for one of the preferred classifications. The following questions will give you a general idea of whether the applicant may qualify for the Super-Preferred or Preferred classifications. If the applicant is under the maximum weight limits as defined in this rate card, and all of the following questions are answered "No", there is a good probability that the applicant will qualify for Preferred or Super-Preferred classification. A positive response to a question may not necessarily eliminate them from the preferred classes, but the final determination will be at the discretion of an underwriter.

  1. Has the applicant used any form of tobacco during the last 12 months, including cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes or chewing tobacco?
  2. Has the applicant or anyone in his or her immediate family ever had, or been advised of, any health problems related to blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease, cancer or diabetes?
  3. Has the applicant ever received counseling or treatment for the use of alcohol or drugs?
  4. Has the applicant had more than two minor motor vehicle moving violations within the last two years or any major driving infractions, including driving under the influence of alcohol, within the last 5 years?
  5. Does the applicant participate in any hazardous activities or avocations such as gliding, ballooning, car and motorcycle racing, skin diving, scuba diving, sky diving or aviation?

Riders & Benefits

Waiver of Premium
Waiver of Premium is available for issue ages 18-55. The coverage and premium payment period for this benefit extend to age 65 of the life insured. The charge for Waiver of Premium is 10% of the total premium for males and 15% of the total premium for females. If the life insured remains disabled at the expiry of the conversion period and the premium is waived under the Waiver of Premium provision, the plan will automatically be converted to a term to 100 with a contractually guaranteed premium. If the life insured chose the special conversion rider at issue, the plan will be converted to a permanent life insurance plan. In both instances, the premiums under the new plan will continue to be waived. Please refer to the Life Riders & Benefits Rate Card for details.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)
The AD&D benefit is available for Issue Ages 18-55. This benefit provides for the payment of an additional amount if, as a direct result of an accidental injury, the life insured dies or loses sight or limbs within 365 days as stated in the Life Riders & Benefits. Coverage and premium payment periods for this benefit extend to age 65 of the life insured.

How the Preferred Term Works as a Multi-Life Contract:

Preferred Term permits up to five lives to be insured under the same contract with one billing. Each life insured can be covered for different amounts of insurance and different term options. Preferred Term Multilife Contracts may be applied for by a corporation, a partnership, or by one or more individuals (whether or not the owner or owners are also the lives insured). An individual who drops out of the Multi-Life contract may maintain his or her coverage independently. Each life insured whose Multi-Life coverage ceases because the life insured dies or transfers out of the Preferred Term plan may be replaced by a substitute life insured. The substitute life will be subject to the rates at the time of substitution, if the product is available, as well as satisfactory evidence of insurability and an underwriting fee. Multi-Life coverage offers the flexibility of individual plans, enhanced by group billing, portability and substitution of insured lives.

Beneficiary Designation on a Multi-Life:
When completing an application on multiple lives, complete only one brief designation (usually the owner), where there is a partnership or a corporation. For the 'other' lives indicate: "as shown on the application dated (insert date) on the life of (insert name on first application)".
