The three coverage
structures every Ontarian should understand.
Ontario life insurance is regulated by FSRA and sold by LLQP-licensed partner advisors — a separate licence from RIBO auto/home brokers. AccesDirect connects you with licensed partners rather than acting as an insurer or advisor. Three main structures: term (rented protection), whole (permanent + cash value), universal (permanent + investment flexibility).
Term life (10/20/30 years)
Rented protection — pays a lump sum if you die during the term. Cheapest way to cover income replacement, mortgages, young families. Fully underwritten or simplified issue.
Whole life (permanent)
Lifetime coverage + cash value that grows tax-deferred. Higher premium than term but never expires. Common for estate planning, business succession, permanent needs.
Universal life
Permanent coverage with separate investment side — flexibility on both premium timing and death benefit. Sophisticated tool for high-income Ontarians.
Critical illness (CI)
Lump sum payout on diagnosis of cancer, heart attack, stroke, etc. Fills gaps that life doesn’t — you’re still alive but facing significant costs.
Disability insurance
Pays a monthly benefit if you can’t work due to illness or injury. Statistically far more likely to trigger than a life claim before age 65.
Joint / spousal riders
Two lives on one policy — joint-first-to-die for income replacement, joint-last-to-die for estate/tax planning. Discounted vs. two individual policies.

“$1M term-20 for me and my wife. Advisor found me $18/month less than my bank’s offer — same coverage.”
“Bought term life at 32 with an old carrier, needed more coverage after our second child. New advisor stacked a 20-year on top — no medical, thanks to my existing rating.”
“Diabetic — declined by two direct-quote sites. Advisor knew which insurers accept my profile and got me covered at a fair rate.”
