Rideshare Insurance in Ontario (Uber, Lyft, DoorDash): What’s Required
Driving for Uber on Friday nights, delivering DoorDash between shifts, or picking up a colleague through Facebook Ridesharing? Your personal Ontario auto policy does not cover you during those hours — unless you’ve added the specific endorsement. Here’s how rideshare insurance works in Ontario in 2026.
What Uber and Lyft cover — and don’t
Uber and Lyft carry a group policy (through Intact in Canada) that activates in three phases:
- Phase 1 — App on, waiting for a request: limited Intact coverage. $1M liability, no collision or comprehensive.
- Phase 2 — Trip accepted, en route: full Intact cover ($2M liability, collision, comprehensive) with $1,000 to $2,500 deductible.
- Phase 3 — Passenger on board: same as phase 2, until the trip ends.

The grey zone: app closed, no trip active
When the app is off and you drive for personal use, your personal policy takes over — as long as you’ve told your insurer you rideshare. Without that disclosure, the personal policy can be voided retroactively at claim time. That’s the leading cause of denied coverage in Ontario in 2025.
Endorsements and costs by Ontario insurer
- Intact — Rideshare Endorsement: $15 to $25/month. Bridges Phase 1 and confirms personal coverage off-duty.
- Aviva Journey: up to 25% telematics rebate AND rideshare-compatible via a $12/month endorsement.
- Belair Direct: Ridesharing endorsement $18/month; requires online declaration in-app.
- Wawanesa: built-in rideshare coverage at no surcharge, if annual commercial mileage stays under 12,000 km.
- Cooperators: « Ride-Share Vehicle Insurance » available since 2024, starting at $10/month.
DoorDash, Uber Eats, Skip: delivery vs passenger difference
Food delivery is classified as commercial delivery — even stricter than passenger rideshare. Uber Eats, DoorDash, and Skip provide limited liability only during active delivery. Without the right endorsement, an accident while dropping off a burger isn’t covered at all.
Frequently asked questions
Does my standard auto policy cover Uber on a long weekend?
No. Simply accepting a trip without the endorsement triggers denied coverage for any loss during that period.
Is Uber’s Intact coverage enough?
For occasional rideshare (under 5 hours/week) it can be — but only combined with the personal endorsement, mandatory. Otherwise, denial.
Can I rideshare without telling my insurer?
No. That’s considered material misrepresentation. The insurer can cancel all your policies and file you with CGI (Central Group Insurance) for 6 years.
How long to add the endorsement?
Instant at most insurers; effective on payment of the prorated premium.
